Carrick: No Easy Ride – United Boss Sets Tone Ahead of Hull Opener
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick used his pre-match press conference to deliver a clear message ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League opener against Hull City: there will be no complacency.
Speaking on Thursday, Carrick firmly dismissed suggestions that United’s early fixtures — away to newly promoted Hull on Saturday, followed by a home game against Ipswich — amount to a favourable start.
“There’s no favourable start,” he said. “A newly promoted team away from home is a tough, tough game. I’ve been involved in them in the past so I’m fully aware of what’s coming at us on Saturday and what we’ve got to be ready for. It’s not favourable. It’s an easy thing to throw out there but it’s pretty ridiculous. We’re not taking it that way at all.”
The former midfielder, who took permanent charge in the summer after guiding United to third place and Champions League football as interim from January, stressed the challenge that comes with facing a side riding the wave of promotion.
“There’s that freshness, there’s that buzz around the football club of coming into the Premier League,” he noted. “We’re fully aware of that. We’ll be prepared, mentally and physically.”
Positive Squad Updates
On the injury front, there was encouraging news. New goalkeeper Karl Darlow has trained this week and is in good shape. Benjamin Sesko is back in group training and could be involved for minutes, while Matthijs de Ligt is also training after a long spell out — though he will not feature at the MKM Stadium. Mason Mount remains a doubt after picking up a minor knock and is described as “touch and go” for the weekend, though Carrick was full of praise for the midfielder’s pre-season displays.
Ambition and Realism
Looking at the bigger picture, Carrick balanced ambition with realism when asked about title credentials.
“It’s going to be a jump,” he admitted. “Whatever I say doesn’t really matter… I would never say we can’t, by the way — I don’t believe that. It’s about what we can do and what we believe we can do as a group. The run of form we had last season gives us a lot of confidence, but we know there’s a whole new step to make.”
He also confirmed the club is still looking to strengthen before the window closes, with ongoing work to improve the squad further after the arrivals of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Darlow.
The Buzz Is Back
In a separate exclusive interview with the club, Carrick spoke positively about the atmosphere in training.
“Everyone’s got that buzz and excitement… the quality of training has been very good. We’re all looking forward to the big kick-off and getting the season up and running properly.”
As United prepare for the lunchtime kick-off in Hull, Carrick’s message is consistent with the steady, no-nonsense approach that stabilised the side last season. Expect intensity, focus, and zero underestimation of the opposition. For a club still climbing back towards the summit, that attitude may prove just as important as any result on the opening weekend.
