Manchester United’s Plan for AFCON Departures Revealed
As a lifelong Manchester United supporter who has followed the club through every high and low since the days of Sir Matt Busby, the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 feels like one of those classic Old Trafford curveballs that test the squad’s depth and the manager’s ingenuity. With the tournament kicking off on December 21, 2025, in Morocco and running until January 18, 2026, United risk losing three key players during the busiest festive period: Amad Diallo (Ivory Coast), Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon), and Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco).
Rúben Amorim, in his press conference ahead of the Everton match, has now openly revealed the club’s proactive strategy to mitigate the impact – and it’s a smart, pragmatic one that echoes past successes.
The Core Plan: Negotiate Delays with National Federations
Amorim confirmed that Manchester United are in direct talks with the federations of Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Morocco to delay the release of Mbeumo, Diallo, and Mazraoui for as long as possible.
FIFA regulations require players to be released 14 days before a national team’s first match (or the tournament start for hosts), but clubs and associations can agree mutual “different arrangements”. United successfully did this with André Onana ahead of AFCON 2023, keeping him until literally the day before Cameroon’s opener.
Amorim said:
“We are trying to have the players a bit longer… We will try to arrange something with the federations. We already knew [about AFCON], so it is a chance for other players.”
This is the headline part of the plan: buying extra weeks (or even days) of availability during the brutal December schedule that includes six Premier League games.
No January Panic Buys – Trust in Squad Depth and the Academy
Sources close to the club (including Sky Sports reporting) indicate United have no intention of dipping into the January market purely to cover these absences. The focus remains on 2026 midfield reinforcements, not short-term patchwork on the right flank or at right wing-back.
Instead, Amorim is turning to:
• Academy prospects stepping up (“Our academy is for this moment… we’ll be ready” – Amorim).
• Tactical flexibility in his 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 system: shifting players across, leaning harder on set-pieces (where De Ligt, Maguire, Yoro, and Casemiro excel), and maximising the returning Benjamin Šeško up top.
• Existing senior options such as Joshua Zirkzee rotations, and potentially repositioning players like Diogo Dalot or even experimenting with inverted roles.
Potential Impact and Fixtures Affected
If no delays are agreed, the trio could depart as early as December 7–8. Morocco (hosts) open on December 21, so Mazraoui is almost certain to be needed earliest.

Why This Plan Makes Sense for United Right Now
Amorim’s side are building momentum after a strong run of form. Mbeumo has been sensational since his summer arrival from Brentford (already leading our goal charts), Amad is finally delivering consistent end-product, and Mazraoui has been the best right wing-back in the league. Losing the entire right-side dynamism would hurt any team.
But this measured approach – negotiate first, trust the squad second, no knee-jerk spending – is exactly the disciplined, long-term thinking we’ve needed after years of reactive transfers. It gives youngsters their moment under the lights and keeps the powder dry for the real priorities in 2026.
